West Australian artist and cultural icon Leon Pericles has created new painting, mixed-media and etching works for an upcoming solo exhibition at Linton & Kay Galleries in Subiaco.

Taming a Tumultuous Palette is a rich collection of the 73-year-old’s fresh new work, exploring translucency, layers and colours, the power and subtlety of transparent and opaque, and the tumultuous palette in between. The exhibition runs from 27 May to 19 June.

Pericles’ solo exhibitions are much anticipated events that draw capacity crowds who want to be amongst the first to view his latest creations, meet the artist and learn about his techniques and motivation.

Linton and Kay General Manager Miranda Brown said the team was excited to again present an exhibition by one of Western Australia’s most well-respected artists.

“Following on from Leon’s Retrospective in 2018, this is the first time he has shown an exclusive exhibition of new original paintings with our gallery and in WA.

“This will be a great chance for all those that love his unique style and storytelling to add an original Pericles to their collection.”

Pericles fans will also be treated to a taste of his trademark style. The exhibition will reveal Pericles’ newest etching: Seconds Before Goff & Sue’s Life Changed Forever. This masterful creation features an overload of his signature detail and wit.

Also showing will be a series of intricate mixed-media works filled with colour, texture and iconic Pericles patterning.

Pericles said inspiration for some of the works featured in the exhibition was derived from a feeling to create strange colour mixes and shapes influenced by nature.

“A competition with God if you will,” he said. “Whomever that may be.”

“Take the weird and wonderful nudibranch marine molluscs. I’m so impressed with nature’s variety. I don’t think I could invent something that is equal to the bizarre creatures that already exist. I think I’ve lost the competition.”

An opening night event is planned for Friday 3 June and Pericles will be attending the gallery to meet visitors on Saturday 28 May as part of the preview weekend.

Pericles is acclaimed nationally and internationally, and his work is held in numerous major public and private collections. Pericles was a finalist in the Western Australian of the Year awards in 2021 for his contribution to the arts.
